Ladi celebrates 20 years with FCSC
10th July 2004

Finham Choral Society, Coventry recently celebrated 20 years under the leadership of its resident conductor and Director of Music, Ladi Merriman Johnson. We count ourselves fortunate to have such a talented man in charge. You can read up on Ladi's background in our Web Site here.

To mark the occasion FCSC held a party at a local social club where Ladi was presented with a pair of Edinburgh Crystal goblets and a bottle of wine as a token of our appreciation.

Members of the choir provided entertainment. Monolgues by husband and wife team Sandra and Derek This was followed by two handsome young fellows in spotty red bow ties who gave their interpretation of 'Immortal. Invisible, God only wise'. Of course these weren't the words used. It started as 'Immoral, Impossible, God only knows...'.

A Kazoo 'band' provided us with a taste of what our forthcoming concert 'Elijah' might sound like - or perhaps shouldn't sound like. Red faced and out of puff the galant ladies plodded though 12 bars of something or other - your reporter wasn't quite sure. Only after the rendition was it revealed to be an Elijah extract!!

As in all good parties we had a cake with candles for Ladi to blow out, the wine flowed and we generally had a jolly good time.

Here's to the next twenty!

Immoral, Impossible?
Want to know what the words were? See below.

Immoral, impossible, God only knows
How tenors and basses, sopranos, altos,
In serious concerts are rarely the same
As those who on Wednesday to choir practice came.

Unready, unable to sight read the notes
Nor counting, nor blending, they tighten their throats.
The descant so piercing is soaring above
The melody - only your mother could love.

They have a director but no one knows why,
Not one in the choir deigns to turn him an eye.
It's clear by his waving, he wants them to look,
But each of them stands with their nose in the book.

Despite the offences, the music rings out.
The audience is quiet, enraptured, no doubt.
Their faces are blissful; their thoughts are so deep,
But it is no wonder for they are asleep.
